While I was in South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, I listened to as much music as I could- mostly on the radio in my rental car. If it was one thing I learned from visiting Australia in February 2014 was that a lot of popular music gets released in other countries before the United States.
Always on the lookout for great songs (and often bored with what’s playing in the U.S.), I collected a few favorites using Shazam to identify songs I liked and bought the ones I could on iTunes. One artist who sang my Favorite song find, of course, was NOT available for US buyers in iTunes. The song was Zambezi, by Tresor with the Beatenburg Band. I looked high and low online for the song, and finally took to Twitter to see if the band or singer could help me. Both @BeatenBerg_Band and @TresorOfficial responded and let me know that I could purchase the album VII on CD at the local Musica store. The bonus was, by purchasing the whole CD I also got a lot of other great music, including the hit Mount Everest.
Tresor is a “local artist” but I know I’ll be hearing him worldwide soon. Most the rest of the songs are bound to be hits by summer in the states (excluding a couple of old songs and the ones that hit the airwaves already). So here it is, is my complete Africa playlist:
